Cybersecurity Essentials For Social Impact Organisations

Background

How can an organisation protect its employees and data assets against cyber threats? If you are an organisation leader, this question may have crossed your mind.

On 30 April 2025, better.sg volunteer Joshua Tan hosted a workshop on cybersecurity essentials, attended by representatives from 11 social impact organisations. This session encouraged participants to reflect on the importance of cybersecurity within their organisations.

Why Cybersecurity Matters?

According to the Singapore Cybersecurity Health Report 2023, 53% of non-profit organisations experienced cyber incidents multiple times a year. These incidents often lead to consequences such as data loss, business disruption and reputation damage. How then, can organisations reduce their exposure to such risk?

What Can Social Impact Organisations do?

Every organisation consists of people and data assets. Joshua’s workshop addressed how to mitigate risks in these two areas.

For people, a key strategy is increasing awareness of common vulnerabilities exploited in cyber attacks. These include scams, social engineering and phishing attempts. Joshua also highlighted how weak account passwords and the spread of misinformation can further exacerbate security risks.

For data assets, the workshop introduced concepts such as supply chain risk management. Joshua recommended that organisations assess the cybersecurity standards of vendors involved in managing their physical infrastructure, and consider diversifying vendors where feasible. He also covered best practices for data management to support business continuity, and emphasised compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act to ensure responsible handling of Personally Identifiable Information.

Key Takeaways

If you are a leader of a SIO, it is essential to understand that cybersecurity is not only achievable for organisations of all sizes, but also a shared responsibility.

Special thanks to Joshua for partnering with us to make this workshop possible!
