Important Notice: better.sg is a volunteer-run registered charity. The tools, applications, and resources we make available are produced on a best-effort basis by unpaid volunteers. By accessing or using anything provided by better.sg, you agree to the terms set out in this document, including the limitations on liability described in Sections 6 and 7.
better.sg Limited is a registered charity in Singapore (Charity No. 202016788N). Our mission is to support the non-profit and social sector through technology, by convening a volunteer community of technologists, designers, and professionals who build open-source digital tools.
better.sg does not operate as a commercial technology company. We do not offer software-as-a-service, enter into service-level agreements, or provide professional IT services in the commercial sense unless explicitely agreed in dedicated agreements or contracts. The tools and applications developed under the better.sg community are created by volunteers as acts of goodwill and charitable service.
These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your access to and use of:
• The better.sg website at https://better.sg and any associated subdomains
• Open-source or closed-source applications, tools, or digital resources created by better.sg volunteers and made available ("Volunteer-Built Tools")
• Any other materials, content, or services provided by better.sg
These Terms apply to all users, including individuals, non-profit organisations, ground-up initiatives, and any other third parties who access or use resources provided by better.sg.
These Terms do not apply where better.sg has entered into a separate written agreement with a specific organisation or party. In that case, the terms of the specific agreement shall take precedence over these Terms to the extent of any inconsistency.
All applications and digital tools developed under the better.sg community are created by volunteers who generously contribute their time and skills. These tools are:
• Developed on a best-effort basis, without guaranteed quality standards, security standards, timelines, or deliverables
• Provided as-is, without warranties of any kind, express or implied
• Not subject to any service level agreements, uptime guarantees, or support obligations
• Subject to change, discontinuation, or withdrawal at any time, without prior notice
Wherea Volunteer-Built Tool is made available as open-source software, it may be used by third parties subject to the terms of the relevant open-source licence (e.g., MIT, Apache 2.0). Users are responsible for reviewing and complying with the applicable licence terms.
Where better.sg makes a Volunteer-Built Tool available directly to a third-party organisation for deployment or use, such use is governed by these Terms unless a separate written agreement has been executed between better.sg and that organisation.
better.sg does not commit to maintaining, updating, bug-fixing, or supporting any Volunteer-Built Tool after it has been released. Requests for enhancements or support are welcome but cannot be guaranteed.
By using better.sg's website or Volunteer-Built Tools, you agree that you will not:
• Use any tool or resource in a manner that violates any applicable law or regulation in Singapore or your jurisdiction
• Use the tools to process, store, or transmit personal data in a manner inconsistent with the Singapore Personal Data Protection Act 2012 or other applicable data protection laws
• Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with any tool or application beyond what is permitted by its open-source licence
• Represent to any third party that better.sg has endorsed, certified, or guaranteed the quality or fitness of any tool
• Use better.sg's name, logo, or branding without prior written consent
• Use any tool or resource for commercial resale without prior written consent from better.sg
Unless otherwise stated:
• Content on the better.sg website (text, graphics, logos) is owned by or licensed to better.sg and may not be reproduced without permission
• Volunteer-Built Tools are typically released under open-source licences. The applicable licence will be stated in the relevant repository or documentation
• Contributing volunteers retain moral rights to their work but grant better.sg and the community rights to use, adapt, and distribute contributions under the relevant open-source licence
better.sg respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users to do the same.
Please read carefully: All resources provided by better.sg, including Volunteer-Built Tools, are provided "as is" and "as available", without any warranty of any kind. better.sg makes no representations or warranties, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, reliability, or non-infringement.
In particular, better.sg does not warrant that:
• Any tool or application will be free from errors, bugs, or security vulnerabilities
• Any tool or application will meet your specific requirements or be fit for your intended purpose
• Any tool or application will be continuously available or uninterrupted
• Data processed or stored using any Volunteer-Built Tool will be secure or preserved
You assume full responsibility for assessing the suitability of any better.sg resource for your use case before deploying or relying on it.
Please read carefully: To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, better.sg, its trustees, volunteers, officers, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your access to or use of, or inability to use, any resource provided by better.sg — including Volunteer-Built Tools — regardless of the cause of action or the theory of liability.
This includes but is not limited to:
• Loss of data, revenue, profits, goodwill, or business opportunities
• Damage to systems or infrastructure resulting from use of a Volunteer-Built Tool
• Decisions made in reliance on outputs or data from any better.sg tool
• Service interruptions, downtime, or discontinuation of any tool
Where better.sg has entered into a separate written agreement with a specific organisation that includes provisions on liability, those provisions shall govern as between better.sg and that organisation.
Nothing in these Terms limits liability for fraud, wilful misconduct, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under Singapore law.
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless better.sg, its trustees, volunteers, officers, and affiliates from and against any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal costs) arising out of or related to:
• Your use of any better.sg resource in violation of these Terms
• Your violation of any applicable law or the rights of any third party
• Any deployment or integration of a Volunteer-Built Tool into your own systems or services without adequate testing or safeguards
Where better.sg enters into a separate written agreement with a third-party organisation (for example, a Memorandum of Understanding, project agreement, or service arrangement), the terms of that specific agreement will govern the relationship for the matters it covers.
These Terms apply as a baseline for all users in the absence of, or in addition to, any such specific agreement. Where there is a conflict between these Terms and a specific written agreement, the specific written agreement shall prevail.
Organisations seeking a more formal arrangement — including any customised terms around project scope, data handling, or support — are welcome to contact us at info@better.sg.
Volunteer-Built Tools may integrate with or depend on third-party services, APIs, or platforms (such as cloud hosting, mapping services, or communication tools). better.sg:
• Has no control over the availability, reliability, or security of third-party services
• Is not responsible for the terms, privacy practices, or conduct of third-party providers
• Does not warrant that integrations with third-party services will remain functional
Users who integrate Volunteer-Built Tools into their own environments are responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable third-party terms of service.
Your use of the better.sg website is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which is available at https://better.sg/privacy-policy. The Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal data in accordance with the Singapore Personal Data Protection Act 2012.
Where a Volunteer-Built Tool is deployed by a third-party organisation, that organisation is responsible for its own data protection obligations in relation to end users.
better.sg may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify users of material changes by posting an updated version on our website with a revised effective date. Your continued use of better.sg resources following such changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms.
We encourage you to review these Terms periodically.
These Terms are governed by the laws of Singapore. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the Singapore courts.
We encourage any concerns to be raised directly with us at info@better.sg before initiating formal proceedings. We will make every reasonable effort to resolveissues amicably.
